WHAT IS myRTK?
myRTK is an application, designed for both computers and mobile devices, that provides the following information
about TRI facilities: mapped location, chemical releases, compliance history, pollution prevention activities, and
waste management methods. Users can also access information on the potential health effects associated with the TRI
chemicals facilities release. myRTK is available in both English and Spanish.
DISCOVERING INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Shown below on the left is the myRTK home screen. To begin, select whether you want the site shown in English or
Spanish. Next, enter the area information (street, city, state, and/or zip code) of interest. Then, select "Find Facilities"
to generate the results. In the example below, the city Hartford, Connecticut has been entered.

By default, your search results are displayed on the "Map" tab (above, middle). The small blue dot on the map
represents the center of the search area. Blue solid markers represent facilities that have submitted reports to the TRI
Program in the most recent reporting year. Grey striped markers represent facilities that aren't required to report to the
TRI Program but have other EPA permits and may produce, release, or handle TRI chemicals. When you click on a
marker, brief details about the facility are shown. To narrow or broaden the search area, zoom in and out on the map.
To display the results in list form, click the "List" tab (above, right).
In both map and list view, you can click on the name of the facility to generate a facility report.

UNDERSTANDING A FACILITY REPORT IN myRTK
Facility reports provide additional information on the
selected facility. Facilities marked with solid blue markers
have more extensive facility reports since they are required to
submit annual reports to the TRI Program. First displayed is
the facility's Name, Address, Industry type, and TRI ID.
Following that, the facility is compared with other facilities
in the same industry sector, both at the county and national
levels.
In the example (right), compared to the other 79 facilities that
meet TRI reporting requirements in the Fabricated Metals
sector in Hartford CT, the Har-Conn Chrome Co facility
contributes to less than 1% of the total amount TRI chemical
releases (in pounds). Nationally, out of 2,168 total TRI
facilities in the fabricated metals industry, this facility ranks
707. Note, this ranking system is based on the quantity of
chemicals released, not the toxicity of those chemicals.
Listed next are the TRI chemicals that originate on the facility's property and how these chemicals are released
(to air, water, or land). For this example below, this facility has met the reporting threshold for three TRI
chemicals. In the last reporting year, this facility released 502 pounds of Nitric Acid to the air and both 184
pounds of Nitrate Compounds and .08 pounds of Lead Compounds to the water. You can view a list of health
effects associated with each chemical by clicking on the chemical name.

Facilities also report to TRI how they manage and work to reduce their waste. If a facility has taken measures to
reduce the amount of waste they generate, a checkmark will appear next to the "New Source Reduction Activities".
Before releasing waste into the environment, facilities can further prevent pollution by recycling their waste,
processing it for energy recovery, or treating it.
In the example below, the facility releases about half of its reported TRI chemical waste and treats most of what
remains; a small portion is also recycled. This facility also has not conducted any new pollution prevention activities
in the last reporting year. You can click "Go to full P2 report" to access EPA's Envirofacts tool which provides more
detailed information on the facility's pollution prevention and waste management activities, including those conducted
in the past.

The Waste Management Hierarchy
What is the EPA's Waste Management Hierarchy?
Established by the Pollution Prevention Act, EPA's waste
management hierarchy prioritizes methods of waste management
to help guide facilities that generate waste. EPA encourages
facilities to first try to reduce their generation of waste (source
reduction). If source reduction is not feasible, facilities are
encouraged to recycle waste, followed by burning the waste for
energy recovery, then treatment, and as a last resort dispose of the
waste.

Compliance history is shown in quarterly segments. If yellow or red is shown, this indicates that the facility was out
of compliance with certain environmental laws during that quarter. If available, the number of days since the last
full inspection will be shown along with the number of formal enforcement actions made in the last five years. At
the top of the section, you can also see if the facility holds any other EPA permits.
In this example, the facility has been in and out of compliance for the last three years and zero formal enforcement
action has been taken within the last five years. Shown at the top of the section is an indicator that this facility also
has other EPA permits for air, water, and land disposal. To learn more about these additional permits, you can visit
EPA's Facility Registry System (FRS). More detailed facility compliance information is available when you click
on "More Compliance Data"; this link directs you to EPA's ECHO tool.
