Safety Kleen Corp VI Silver Spring, Maryland W The Road to Reuse ~~~ The Safety Kleen Corp Service Center in Silver Spring, Maryland began operation in 1982 and was closed and decommissioned in April 1996. The site is located in Silver Spring, Maryland, Montgomery County, approximately 500 feet south of the intersection of Tech Road and U.S. Highway 29 (Columbia Pike). The former service center was located in an industrial park and the surrounding area is zoned for light industrial use and included Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 0.24 Current Use: Offices of the local branch of the State Employees Credit Union an area of approximately 10,300 square feet that was used as an accumulation point for spent solvents and other fluids generated by Safety Kleen customers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to work with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), who is directing the post-closure care and cleanup activities at the facility, to ensure that RCRA Corrective Action goals are met. MDE issued a Post-Closure Permit for the area in February 2001, which was renewed and re-issued in December 2008. MDE works with Safety Kleen on any appropriate modifications or revisions to the permit as cleanup progresses. The former service center has been redeveloped and now houses the offices of a branch of the State Employees Credit Union (SECU).in the former warehouse building.
