The Road to Reuse
~~~
The former Kelly-Springfield Tire
Company (Kelly-Springfield)
tire manufacturing plant in
Cumberland, Maryland has been
transformed into a YMCA and
business park.
Kelly-Springfield purchased the
82-acre property in 1917 and
manufactured rubber tires at the
location for over 65 years. The
major structures on the property
consisted of manufacturing
buildings, tire assembly and curing
facilities, office buildings, testing
laboratories, and warehouses.
During World War II, between
1941 and 1942, the facility was
converted to produce 550-caliber
shell cartridges for the army.
Kelly-Springfield operated the tire
manufacturing plant at the site from
1921 to 1987.
The Board of County
Commissioners of Allegany
County, Maryland, purchased the
property in June 1991 from the
Maryland Economic Development
Corporation (MEDCO), which
purchased the property from
Kelly-Springfield in 1987. At
that time all manufacturing
operations were discontinued.
The manufacturing and processing
facilities were removed and the
site was subdivided and sold for
redevelopment.
Much of the factory and most
of the buildings of the former
production plant used by Kelly-
Springfield have been razed. The
site is now home to a branch of
the Cumberland YMCA and the
Riverside Industrial Park. The
Riverside Industrial Park currently
houses the County Government
Office Complex and other small
businesses; however, in February
2009, it was announced that
Pat ton air USA plans to open an
80,000-square-foot warehouse and
distribution facility in Riverside
Industrial Park that will bring 25
new jobs to Allegany County. Part
of the Umeco Group, Pattonair is
one of the world's leading providers
of distribution and supply chain
management services for the
aerospace and defense markets.
