U.S. Army Engineer Proving Ground - Fort Belvoir Springfield, Virginia The Road to Reuse ~~~ The Fort Belvoir Engineer Proving Ground (Fort Belvoir EPG) is part of the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Belvoir, which is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, 14 miles south of Washington, DC. EPG is an 807-acre tract located 1.5 miles northwest of the main post of Fort Belvoir. The site is bordered by commercial and residential properties. The property was acquired by the U.S. Army in the early 1940s and was used as a testing and engineer training site for methods and equipment for deployment, detection, and neutralization of land mines. In support of the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) Act of 2005, the Fort Belvoir EPG will be redeveloped to support approximately 8,500 personnel that are scheduled to arrive at Fort Belvoir EPG over the next four years. Since September of 2003, the U.S. Environmental Protection Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 170 Current Use: Planned offices and visitor center; planned county parkway Agency (EPA) has been working with Fort Belvoir in the implementation of investigations and remediation at Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) and Areas of Concerns. One of the agencies identified for location at Fort Belvoir EPG is the National Geospatial- Intelligence Agency. This project includes the development of a 2.41 million square foot office building, including technical center, utility plant, visitor center, remote inspection facility, and structured parking for 5,100 vehicles. The project broke ground in September 2007. It is anticipated that the main building will be occupied starting in May 2011. Also, approximately 170 acres of land is proposed in a land transfer from the Department of the Army to Fairfax County, Virginia. The county proposes to use the land as a right of way for the constructi on of the Fairfax County Parkway.
