2. Current Activities
2.1 Operations Section
2.1.1	Narrative
Contaminated soils were removed for disposal and limited backfilling commenced in the excavation
area. Soil flushing with clean water was conducted to remove and recover crude oil from track ballast
and access ramp areas, with contaminated water treated in the on-site WTP. Off-spec crude oil was
removed from storage tanks staged on site and shipped for refining. Field oversight personnel from
Illinois EPA and US EPA continue to monitor activities.
2.1.2	Response Actions to Date
During this reporting period, the following field activities took place:
-	Contaminated soils were transported for disposal at a landfill;
-	Backfilling of the excavated area with clean sand commenced to support excavation of contaminated
soil from the access ramp area;
-	Additional contaminated soils were excavated from the access ramp to the impacted area;
-	Track ballast and access ramp areas were flushed to remove & recover crude oil;
-	Contact water was collected and treated from the interceptor trench adjacent to the track ballast;
-	Crude oil recovered from derailed tanker cars was shipped for refining (approx. 94,000 gal shipped to
date);
-	Water quality was monitored and sampled in Harris Slough; and
-	Roadway repairs & maintenance continued on Pilot Knob Road.
Water treatment plant effluent is sampled daily for laboratory analysis of the following parameters: BTEX,
PNAs, Oil & Grease, pH & TSS. Soil samples taken to verify that an excavation grid is clear for
backfilling are analyzed in a laboratory for BTEX and PNAs. Sampling results from split samples taken
by US EPA on 4/1/2015 were comparable to those taken by a contractor to BNSF Railway.
There continues to be no visual or monitoring data evidence to indicate that any spilled product has
impacted either the Galena or Mississippi Rivers. There were no injuries at the Site or wildlife impacts
reported during the reporting period.
