PROJECT SUMMARY
Community
The property is located at 794 Green Street, East Palo Alto, California. All Five, a
local non-profit organization that promotes early childhood development for
disadvantaged families, partnered with the Apostolic Assembly of the Faith
church to determine whether the property would be suitable for a preschool. East
Palo Alto encompasses some of California's most environmentally overburdened
and socially underserved communities. EPA places a high priority on providing
Brownfields technical assistance and other support to such communities.
Property Information
The property is located in a mixed commercial, agricultural, and residential
neighborhood. The historical land use in this area has been residential and
agricultural, with the region once composed primarily of orchard crops and
small vegetable farms. A house and a shed are located in the northern portion
of the property. Vehicles have been stored on the property.

Technical Assistance
EPA provides technical assistance to research historic property uses, conduct
environmental sampling and identify cleanup options and costs. An EPA-funded
environmental assessment was conducted to assess the property for contaminants
of concern that included metals, organochlorine pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons
and volatile organic compounds. Petroleum hydrocarbons and lead were
detected in soil samples above levels of potential concern. Recommendation;
Brownfields cleanup alternatives identified for this property include additional
sampling as well as excavation and off-site disposal of soil in selected areas based
upon the assessment results.
Future Use
The local non-profit, All Five, considered using the property as an early child-
care education center but has selected a different site. The church may have uses
for the site.
