Ericsson Inc* Lynchburg, Virginia The Road to Reuse ~~~ Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 117 Current Use: University student center and classrooms, church In May 2002, Ericsson, a cell phone manufacturer, conducted an exploratory excavation of a Radio Scrap Burial Area in response to a future real estate transaction. After exploratory trenching, Ericsson excavated an area approximately 20 feet by 20 feet, with a depth of 9 feet into a relatively solid layer of saprolite. The removal included chassis components for use in private radio system base stations, circuit board components in original cardboard and plastic packaging, plastic microphones, wire, miscellaneous electronic components and two batteries. The majority of the material was generally un-weathered with cardboard packaging still intact. Sampling collected from the excavation showed all levels below residential or background levels. The property was subsequently sold to Liberty University for campus expansion. The former Ericsson cell phone plant, now renamed Campus North, was converted into a student center, law school, seminary, Thomas Road Baptist Church and affiliated offices, Liberty Christian Academy, an indoor track and other amenities.
