Safety Kleen, Inc. Malvern, Pennsylvania The Road to Reuse ~~~ Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 1 Current Use: Auto-parts Supply Center This one-acre facility is located in Malvern, Pennsylvania and was used as a machine shop before being leased to Safety Kleen in 1977. Safety Kleen used the facility for the next 11 years as a collection and distribution center for solvents and cleaning solutions. In 1994, the facility was closed by Safety Kleen under a state-approved closure plan. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) performed the remedial activities at the facility, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provided oversight to ensure these activities conformed to the standards of a RCRA Corrective Action cleanup. Remediation included the excavation of about 1,000 cubic yards of soil from the parking lot and two dumpster and filling areas. The excavation was required because underground storage tanks had been used in that area at various points in the site's history. Groundwater monitoring was also required under the closure plan. From December 1991 to March 1994, monitoring showed that contaminants of concern had declined to an acceptable level and PADEP approved terminating groundwater monitoring. On June 16, 2007, EPA made a final determination that there was no further remedial action necessary at the facility. Currently, the facility is operating as an auto parts supply center.
