Smart^Growth Applications are due

Applications are now being accepted for the eighth
annual EPA National Award for Smart Growth
Achievement. This competition is open to public-sector
or private sector applicants that have used the principles
of smart growth to create better places. Private-sector
applicants are encouraged to submit applications for
projects that demonstrate a significant public-private
partnership. This year, applications will be accepted in
five categories:
Built Projects
Policies and Regulations
Smart Growth and Green Building
Smart Growth Streets
Overall Excellence in Smart Growth
Public sector winners will receive support for further
implementing smart growth strategies in their
communities. In addition, public sector winners will
receive one complementary registration to the New
Partners for Smart Growth Conference in 2010.

What Does It Mean and
How Do You Do It?

Providence, Rl and Worcester, MA)
Greening waste site cleanup is a rapidly developing
concept and has become an important issue for
regulators, industry and the general public. This
workshop brings together national leaders to:
•	Share information on incorporating sustainability
concepts into the site cleanup process
•	Present case studies that include practical
information on evaluation criteria and using the
results in decision-making
•	Involve attendees in an interactive discussion of
the evolving issues that remain to be resolved

Smart Growth Implementation Assistance:
2009 Request for Application
Applications are due at 5:00 pm EST, April 23, 2009
The Development, Community, and Environment
Division in EPA's Office of Policy, Economics, and
Innovation is seeking applications for technical
assistance from communities that want to incorporate
smart growth in their future development to meet
environmental and other community goals. Eligible
entities are tribal, local, regional, and state governments,
and nonprofit organizations that have a demonstrated
partnership with a governmental entity.
Selected communities or states will receive assistance in
the form of a multi-day visit from a team of experts
organized by EPA and other national partners to work
with local leaders. EPA plans to assist three to five
communities over a period of twelve months. The
Agency anticipates announcing the selected
communities in fall of 2009.

(TAB) Program
Technical Assistance to Brownfield (TAB) Communities
is a program, funded by a grant from the USEPA. which
is intended to serve as an independent resource to
communities and nonprofits attempting to cleanup and
reclaim brownfieids. New Jersey Institute of
Technology's (NJIT) TAB program covers Geographic
Zone 1 for communities in EPA Regions 1, 2, and 3,

The 2009 online ACRES training schedule is now
available. The dates and times are:

Community Health Projects Related to
Brownfield/Land Reuse

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
(ATSDR) has announced the availability of FY 2009
funds for brownfields/land reuse community health
projects. These projects will have a particular emphasis
on identifying health issues prior to redevelopment
and/or assessing changes in community health
associated with reuse plans and redevelopment.
