£% United States Environmental Protection **Agency Community Update July 2012 Crossley Farm Superfund Site Huffs Church, Berks County, Pennsylvania — Construction of OU-2 Treatment Plant Completed — EPA to Hold Open House Who: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), completed the construction of a groundwater treatment plant for the Crossley Farm Superfund Site, located in Huff's Church, PA. EPA would like to invite the community to an Open House on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, from 2:00 -3:30 pm and again from 5:30 -- 7:00 pm, to tour the treatment facility and discuss any questions or concerns you may have about the cleanup project. EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin will officiate the "Ribbon Cutting" ceremony for the treatment plant at 2:00 pm. EPA representatives will then provide a simple guided tour of the treatment plant immediately afterwards and again at 6:00 pm to describe the treatment process and equipment. What: As part of EPA's ongoing cleanup for the Crossley Farm Site, a pump-and-treat system has been constructed to treat TCE-contamination in the groundwater. The facility structure is 140 by 75 feet in size, and approximately 22 feet in height. The treatment plant is located on the farm property and can be accessed by going up the farm road from Huffs Church Road. There are four wells connected to underground piping that will pump the water into the treatment plant. These four wells are expected to pump about 450 gallons of water per minute. Construction work completed includes: • Installation of extraction wells (to pump contaminated groundwater for treatment) • Installation of underground water pipes (to carry groundwater up into the treatment facility) • Repairs to Road (related to pipe work) • Construction of the treatment plant facility (to house pump-and-treat equipment) • Installation of Pump-and-Treat equipment (to remove contamination from groundwater) • Construction of one of the two wetland galleries (to discharge treated water) Where: The newly constructed treatment facility is located on the Crossley Farm property, near the top of Black Head Hill, located off of Dale Road and Dairy Lane, near Huffs Church, Berks County, PA. The address is: 1272 Huffs Church Road, Barto, PA. 19504. When: EPA Treatment Facility Ribbon Cutting, Tuesday July 10, 2012, 2:00pm. Open House begins immediately afterwards and again from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Crossley Farm Site Treatment Facility. Why: As part of EPA's long-term cleanup plans, the groundwater will be treated with air stripping technology to remove the TCE contamination. The water will then go through carbon filtration before it goes into the discharge galleries leading to the Perkiomen Creek. The vapors coming from the air stripping treatment will also be treated before being released. The pump-and-treat system will help stop the contaminated groundwater plume from spreading as well as treat the water. More details on the treatment plans, and other questions, can be discussed one-on-one at the Open House. ------- Left photo shows exterior of treatment building. Right photo shows interior of treatment building. Brief Site Background: The Crossley Farm Site is approximately 200 acres of farmland. A portion of the land was once used for dumping various wastes, resulting in a TCE-contaminated groundwater plume. The Site cleanup is divided into "operable units," or OUs. S OU-1 involved installing point-of-entry carbon treatment units on contaminated residential wells, V OU-2 is addressing the regional groundwater contamination and onsite soils; and s OU-3 will address potential vapor intrusion.
