Green Infrastructure
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Region 6
Bioswale
Mercy Trailhead Project,
Rogers, Arkansas
s part of a grant received from the U.S. EPA and the
Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, the Illinois
River Watershed Partnership (IRWP) is installing green
infrastructure practices at five major trailheads of the
Razorback Regional Greenway in Rogers, Arkansas. The
Razorback Regional Greenway is a 36-mile, primarily
off-road, shared use trail that extends from the Bella
Vista Trail in north Bentonville to south Fayetteville.
The trail links together dozens of popular community
destinations including six downtown areas, three major
hospitals; 23 schools; the University of Arkansas campus;
corporate headquarters; arts and entertainment venues;
shopping areas; historic sites; parks; playgrounds, and;
residential communities.

One of the green infrastructure practices to complement
the Greenway is a bioswale completed at the Rogers' Mercy
Trailhead. This bioswale is designed to capture and filter
stormwater runoff from a parking lot before it reaches Osage
Creek, a major urban tributary of the Illinois River. The
project features a curb-cut that directs all stormwater runoff
from a parking lot into the swale, allowing pollutants such as
silt, sediment, oil, and grease to filter out of the stormwater
and into the soil and roots of native plants.
