Brownfields Revitalization Transforms the Lower Schuylkill US Gypsum and Transmontaigne Sites Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Background The US Gypsum Site was once part of the Gibson Point Terminal of the Gulf Oil Corporation. In 1929, the site was converted to a gypsum manufacturing company that operated until 1988. Subsequent to 1988, the Site was con verted to a concrete mixing plant that received aggregate from barges until 2002. Structures and tanks at the site were demolished and removed in 2007. The Transmontaigne Site is a former oil terminal that operated nearly 75 years. Both sites are now known as Bartram's South. The cleanup involved removal of the liquid petroleum from the groundwater, excavation and disposal of impacted soil, and demonstration of attainment of Pennsylvania Non-Residential Site- Specific Standards. Active removal of soil was completed in the early of 2013, followed by monitoring of sampling wells to ensure that groundwater remediation is complete. EPA Grant Recipient: Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Develop- ment/Philadelphia Industrial Development Corpo- ration (PAID/PIDC) Year Awarded: 2012 Grant Types: (2) Petroleum Site Cleanups, $400,000 Former Uses: Bulk oil storage/blending, gypsum manufacturing, auto repair, and chemical storage Current Planned Uses: Support up to 170,000 sq. feet of commercial use and extension of the Schuylkill River Trail ------- LNAPL and Oil on the Water Table Behind the Transformation The Cleanup Plans & Efforts to Reuse the Site LNAPL was recovered from excavations both through pumping to a treatment tank and direct collection using a vac-truck. Approximately 26,254 gallons of oily water from US Gypsum and 105, 017 gallons from Transmontaigne were disposed of. The site has since been restored to pre-remedial elevations. Remedial activities occurred during the period of October 2012 through March 2013. In total, 6,730 tons of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids- (LNAPLj impacted soils were excavated from the US Gypsum Site and 8,286 tons from the Transmontaigne Site which were recycled off site.
