EPA Mid-Atlantic Region j Brownfields Program | Success Story A Successful Transformation: Valley Supply Distribution Center valley supply JU -T SF: S&s •• Clarksburg, West Virginia Site Description Now a facility that distributes plumbing, heat- ing and ventilation equipment regionally, the former West Virginia Mack site and facility act- ed as a recycling center, industrial junk yard, and natural gas company service center since 1890. Environmental Issues Addressed Environmental site assessment found elevated lead content in soil where underground storage occurred, petroleum and lead content in soil around a truck shop building adjacent to North 4th Street, and lead content in soil along North 4th Street. The City of Clarksburg worked with the U.S. EPA and WVDEP Landfill Closure Assistance Program to clean up the site to a level accepta- ble for commercial reuse. The WV DEP and City are in the process of utilizing the soil excavated from the West Virginia Mack property toward getting the former city landfill capped. The WV DEP oversaw the $2.3 million spent for landfill closure and used 45,000 cubic yards of soil from the West Virgin- ia Mack property for landfill capping, which will save the state about $30,000 in expenses. The City leveraged $21,000 in cleanup funds along with $130,000 in EPA funding. The distribution center re- tained approximately 40 local jobs and created 30 construction jobs. The warehouse hosts a full line of plumbing, heat- ing and cooling tools, pipes, and valve fittings and hard- ware. Equipment includes faucets, fans, heating units, water heaters and more. The warehouse sup- ply company and sales are also open to affiliated groups, such as Construc- tion Employers Association of North Central WV, Home Builders Associa- tion, and American Supply Association and the general public.
