Site Investigation
MC Canfield & Sons Site
Newark, New Jersey
Community Update	January 2013
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
is updating the community to provide information
about the investigation and cleanup at the former MC
Canfield & Sons Site located between Cornerstone
Lane and Marrow Street in Newark, New Jersey.
Site Investigation
EPA conducted a soil sampling investigation in mid
August 2012. Elevated levels of lead in surface and
subsurface soil were discovered near the area of the
former smelting facility above EPA's Residential
Screening Level of 400 parts per million (ppm).
Next Steps
A CERCLA Time-Critical removal action is needed
to address lead contaminated soil found at the
Society Hill Phase III townhouse complex in the
areas near the location of the former smelting
facility. Additional sampling will take place prior to
the initiation of the removal action to better define
the areas to be addressed.
Simple Steps to Reduce Your Lead Exposure
EPA and the New Jersey Department of Llealth
(NJDOH) recommend the following steps be followed
to reduce your potential exposure to lead
contamination that may be present in the surface soils:
•	Keep children away from all bare soil areas, and
cover any bare soil areas that may be on your
property. Maintain any grass already present in
your yard.
•	Remove shoes at the door to prevent tracking in
any dirt that may be on your shoes.
•	Adults and children should frequently wash hands
and face, especially after they come inside from
outside.
PUBLIC MEETING
EPA will be holding a public meeting to
discuss recent sampling activities,
provide information about further
residential soil sampling and future
cleanup actions planned for the
community.
Representatives from EPA and Newark
Department of Child and Family
Wellbeing will be available to meet with
you to discuss any concerns you may
have about the MC Canfield & Sons Site.

Site Background
The former MC Canfield & Sons Site, located at 93
Wilsey Street, was redeveloped for residential use in
the early 1990s. A portion of Wilsey Street in
Newark was renamed and is now known as
Cornerstone Lane. MC Canfield & Sons operated a
lead smelter on a portion of the Site from 1907 until
1974.
Sampling by NJDEP in March 2012 revealed the
presence of elevated levels of lead in the soil in the
area of the former MC Canfield & Sons Site.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental
Protection (NJDEP) asked EPA to evaluate the
former MC Canfield & Sons Site for removal
consideration under the federal Comprehensive
Environmental Response Cleanup and Liability Act
(CERCLA), commonly known as the Superfund
program. EPA conducted the August 2012 sampling
effort in response to the NJDEP request.
