2010 Toxics Release Inventory
Oregon State Report
December 2011
Releases in the State of Oregon
What is a Release?
In 2010, 271 facilities reported a total of 18 million pounds
of toxic chemical releases, an increase of 20%, or 3 million
pounds, from 2009. Oregon ranks 38th in the nation for
total releases of TRI chemicals.
A TRI "release" is defined as the amount of a toxic
chemical released on-site (to air, water, underground
injection, landfills, and other land disposal), and the
amount transferred off-site for disposal. All releases values
in this report are listed in pounds released per year.

Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) Chemicals
PBT chemicals are toxic chemicals that persist in the environment and bioaccumulate in food chains, posing risks to
human health and ecosystems. PBT chemicals are a subset of the TRI-listed chemicals that have stricter reporting
requirements. In Oregon, 3 million pounds of total releases of PBT chemicals were reported. This is an increase of 1.7
million pounds, or 141 %. Lead and polycyclic aromatic compounds topped the list in 2010. The PBT chemicals in the table
are ranked in descending order of pounds released in 2010.
