PARKVIEW WELL EPA Region 7 06/12/2006 NEBRASKA Citv: Grand lslan(l EPA ID# NEN000704456 County: Hall Other Names: Stolley Park SITE DESCRIPTION The Parkview Well Superfund Site is located in the southwestern portion of the City of Grand Island in Hall County, Nebraska. The site consists of two areas of groundwater contamination and associated sources. Municipal and private wells are located within or near the groundwater contamination. The site extends east-northeastward from near the intersection of South Engleman Road and West Husker Highway towards the intersection of Pioneer Boulevard and Commerce Avenue. Site Responsibility: This site is being addressed through Federal, State and potentially responsible party actions. NPL LISTING HISTORY Proposed Date: 09/23/2004 Final Date: 04/19/2006 Deleted Date: THREATS AND CONTAMINANTS The groundwater has been contaminated with several volatile organic ------- contaminants including tetrachloroethene (PCE), 1,1-dichloroethene (DCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCA). Contamination in the groundwater has been detected in private and municipal water supply wells. CLEANUP APPROACH Response Action Status Initial Actions: Under a removal action and through work with the state and a potentially responsible party, the private domestic wells where contaminant concentrations have exceeded health-based levels have been replaced by hookup to city water supplies or treated via whole-house treatment systems. One municipal well has been removed from service. Site Studies: A Preliminary Assessment and Site Inspection, along with several subsequent trip reports for further investigations, have been completed for the site. As a result, the site was divided into a Northern Study Area and a Southern Plume Area. The Northern Study Area is being investigated by a potentially responsible party under an administrative-order-on-consent (AOC) for a remedial investigation. The Southern Plume and associated potential source area are currently being investigated by EPA, given that no responsible parties have been identified to date. One or more feasibility studies and records-of-decision will be prepared for the Parkview Well Superfund Site following these investigations. Periodic groundwater sampling continues to be conducted to protect both public and private drinking water wells. Site Facts: ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRESS Removal actions have addressed the private wells where contamination was found to exceed health-based levels. Investigations of the location and extent of contamination, and the source of the problem, are underway. Solutions to address the groundwater contamination are being developed. ------- COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT • Press Release Announcing Proposal to NPL, 9/04; • Headquarters Fact Sheet for NPL Proposal, 9/04; • Fact Sheet Announcing Public Availability Session, 4/05; • Community Interviews, 5/05; • Public Availability Meeting, 5/05 • Technical Assistance Grant Notification, Fact Sheet and Display Ad, 5/05 • Fact sheet announcing final listing of the site to the NPL, 4/06.
