Spartan Chemical Co. Wyoming, Mich. Site Description EPA added the five-acre Spartan Chemical Co. site to the National Priorities List in 1983. From 1952-92, Spartan Chemical Co. operated a bulk chemical transfer, blending and repackaging plant in Wyoming, Mich. Hazardous liquid chemicals were produced and stored, which contaminated soils and groundwater. The area around the site contains light industrial, commercial and residential properties, and is heavily populated. Current Site Status and Cleanup Actions to Date • In 1999, an interim response action was performed at the site that included the installation of a soil vapor extraction system. • In 2007, a final record of decision was signed calling for institutional controls restricting groundwater use, excavation and disposal of highly contaminated soils, expansion of the soil vapor extraction system for mitigation of vapors, air sparging, in-situ chemical oxidation, a contingency for enhanced in-situ bioremediation and monitored natural attenuation. • There is an ongoing investigation of possible soil vapor intrusion at a facility adjacent to the Spartan Chemical property. If required, additional actions will be taken to mitigate vapor intrusion. • Once this project is funded and completed, all unacceptable human exposure pathways will be eliminated for the entire site. Unfunded Action The FY 2013 work that was not funded involved institutional controls restricting groundwater use, excavation and disposal of highly contaminated soils, expansion of the soil vapor extraction system for mitigation of vapors, air sparging, in-situ chemical oxidation, a contingency for enhanced in-situ bioremediation, and monitored natural attenuation. Current Funding Status To date, EPA has spent approximately $1.7 million on construction work at the site.
