This Community Update is provided to keep you informed of EPA's
cleanup of the E.C. Electroplating facility, located at 125 Clark
Street in Garfield, and provide information about the investigation
of chromium in groundwater beneath the southwest section of
Garfield.
EPA to Remove Contained Waste from the E.C.
Electroplating Building
EPA has found several hundred drums and containers inside the
E.C. Electroplating building. Drum and container contents have
been tested to prepare for their removal. Testing indicated the
presence of acids, metal plating solution, and waste sludges. All
containers and drums have been secured and will be removed from
the building and taken to treatment and disposal facilities. It is
anticipated that the removal of drums and containers will take place
within the next several months. To ensure public safety, EPA will
closely coordinate this removal action with the City of Garfield
emergency services. As with previous actions, EPA will keep you
informed with additional Community Updates.
EPA to Expand Groundwater Monitoring Well Network to
Determine Extent of Chromium in Groundwater
Last winter EPA installed twenty four monitoring wells in the
southwest section of Garfield. Installation of up to nine additional
monitoring wells is- planned this spring. The approximate locations
of these monitoring wells are indicated on the attached figure. Once
installed, these wells will be sampled to determine how far and how
deep chromium extends in the groundwater. After the extent of
chromium in the groundwater is determined, EPA will consider
technologies that may be used to cleanup the groundwater.
