Jones Road Ground Water Plume

Site Description
The Jones Road Ground Water Plume site is located in the northwest portion of Harris County, Texas. EPA
added the site to the National Priorities List in 2003. The site's contamination source is the former Bell Dry
Cleaners facility, which operated from 1988-2002 in a small strip mall. During that time, the owners improperly
disposed of toxic wastewater from their dry cleaning machines, including disposal in a nearby storm drain. The
chemicals contaminated the local soil and groundwater, and spread to nearby drinking wells. The chemicals
also are evaporating in the soil and entering the interior air of buildings as toxic vapors. The area around the
site includes residential, commercial and light industrial development.
Current Site Status and Cleanup Actions to Date
•	In 2008, EPA conducted a time-critical removal action that included the installation of a water line with
connections to homes and businesses at the site.
•	In 2010, EPA issued a final cleanup plan involving in situ treatments of contaminated soil and
groundwater.
•	In 2011, EPA plugged the water wells of customers connected to the water line installed in 2008.
•	Although funding and completion of this project will result in environmental progress, it will not
eliminate all unacceptable human exposure pathways. Additional work will be needed to address those
residents who declined connection to the water supply line in 2008.
Unfunded Action
Fiscal Year 2013 work that was not funded involved installation of a groundwater pump and treat system.
Current Funding Status
To date, EPA has spent approximately $8.3 million on construction work at the site.
