UPDATE
Due to the unprecedented impact of Hurricane Sandy,
and the subsequent response, the cleanup work for the
site has been rescheduled for early Spring of 2013.
Local vendors and subcontractors supporting EPA's
cleanup efforts on the site have dedicated their
resources to the Hurricane response and are not
immediately available.
SITE STATUS
EPA performed an inspection of the site after the Hurricane
and observed no major damages to any of the properties.
The commercial property located at 1660 Oak Tree Road
(Extra Space Storage) was able to recommence work on
their property and expects completion by the end of 2012.
NEXT STEPS
EPA will continue to oversee the actions on the Extra
Space Storage property and will begin removal
activities on the residential properties in spring 2013.
An update of EPA's schedule will be provided in
early 2013. Removal activities will include the
excavation of lead contaminated soils, replacement of
excavated soil with clean backfill and topsoil, and the
restoration of the properties to pre-removal condition,
including landscaping.
SITE BACKGROUND
Caswell, Strauss & Co. was a fonner lead smelter
that operated for a brief period from the 1940's to
the 1950's. The property has since been sold and
redeveloped. A portion of the property is currently
home to the Extra Space Storage business facility
which is under an Order with EPA to conduct a
