SUPPORTING EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT &
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN COMMUNITIES
WITH BROWNFIELDS CHALLENGES
Free Technical Assistance from Groundwork USA
Groundwork USA is a national organization with iocai roots that works to empower people and
engage local businesses, organizations, and government officials to revitalize neighborhoods and
transform community liabilities into community assets. US EPA is funding Groundwork USA to help
communities understand and integrate environmental justice and equitable development principles
into Iocai brownfields assessment, cleanup and reuse projects. Through May 2024, brownfield
communities can access Groundwork USA's resources and technical assistance for free! Groundwork
USA's offerings will include:
Developing a visual resource library with a series of audio, video and visual guides to demonstrate
community engagement activities and make critical aspects of the redevelopment process more
accessible and engaging for residents, nonprofits, government organizations and developers.
Delivering a series of workshops and trainings to build local capacity for implementing equitable
development and environmental justice principles into brownfieids projects. Trainings include
supporting long-term engagement with a broad coalition of stakeholders, developing environmental
justice and equitable development goals, and other community-identified topics. Many of these
trainings will be offered via Zoom and recordings will be made available in the visual resource library.
Offering direct technical assistance to approximately 25 clients, particularly those located in
under-resourced communities and communities of color, based on their self-identified needs as
they relate to:
-	Building stakeholder capacity to integrate equity and environmental justice into all phases of
the brownfield process
-	Building technical capacity to enhance community involvement in brownfield reuse
-	Vision building, shared leadership and decision making
-	Setting, evaluating, and communicating progress on environmental justice and equitable
development goals
-	Community resilience in the face of climate change
-	Using area-wide maps to develop a land reuse strategy that prioritizes community need
