Where is the facility? Evoqua Quick Facts • Spent Carbon is the material treated at the Evoqua facility. Carbon is a material that is used to clean other materials such as water. • 5000 tons are processed each year from 30-35 different states. 11% (approximately) is considered hazardous waste by the EPA, due to concen- trations of the contami- nants in the material. • Spent carbon is treated in a furnace so that it can be reused. • The Evoqua facility has been operating since 1992. But it has had different names throughout its lifetime including Siemens, US Filter, and Westates. How does EPA ensure that the Evoqua facility is operating safely? • EPA has performed a risk assessment (see other fact sheet titled "Risk Assessment at Evoqua Water Technologies") . • EPA performs regular, unannounced inspections, which ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. ------- What is in a Permit Application? Among other things... • Information on facility operations, structures, equipment, and waste characteristics • Emergency plans • Personnel training • Recordkeeping plan • Sampling plans and cost estimates for closing the facility • Insurance for covering the cost of the facility closure Community Involvement and Next Steps Once EPA has finished reviewing the permit applica- tion, EPA will propose a permit decision by publish- ing a fact sheet and public notice. This will initiate a 45-day public review and comment period, during which EPA will hold a public meeting and hearing This public comment period represents an important opportunity for the public to comment on EPA's proposed decision before a final decision will be made.
