This is the sixth TechDirect message. Since the July 1 message,
TechDirect has 210 new subscribers. To those of you new to us,
welcome! Every month we hope to provide you with information on
remediation and site characterization technologies that is current
and relevant to your jobs. If you feel the service is valuable, please
share TechDirect with your colleagues. If your peers are interested

Cleaning Up the Nation's Waste Sites: Markets and Technology
Trends, 1996 Edition (EPA 542-R-96-005). This study updates and
expands a 1993 analysis that brought together for the first time
valuable information on site characteristics, market size, and other
factors that affect the demand for remediation services. The study
addresses the future demand for remediation services in all major
U.S. cleanup programs [July 1997, 253 pages]. The executive
summary is available as a stand alone document [23 pages]. Both
documents may be viewed or downloaded from http://clu-in,orq/techpubs,htm#Auqust.
Hard copies available from (800) 490-9198.
Bioremediation in the Field Search System (Version 2.1). This
updated PC-based software, provides access to a database of
information on waste sites in the United States and Canada where
bioremediation is being tested or implemented, or has been
completed. Version 2.1 currently contains information on over 460
bioremediation sites. The database spans both full-scale efforts and
treatability studies, and includes data on location, media and
contaminants treated, ex situ and in situ technologies, costs, and
performance. Download from http://clu-in.Org/techpubs.htm#Auaust. Order diskettes
from (513) 569-7562.
Bibliography of Phytoremediation Resources. This bibliography
is the work of the EPA Phytoremediation Handbook Team in
conjunction with the RTDF Phytoremediation Action Team. The list
of over 865 citations includes peer reviewed journal articles,
newspaper stories, presentations and posters from conferences,
and book chapters [July 97, 60 pages]. View from

Uncertainty Management: Expediting Cleanup Through
Contingency Planning. This guide describes techniques for
managing project uncertainty through decision rules and
contingency planning. This document was issued jointly by DOE and
EPA [February 1997, 4 pages]. Download from http://tis-nt.eh.doe.aov/oepa.
Expediting Cleanup Through Contingent Removal Actions. This
fact sheet provides a concise description of the components and
application of contingent removal actions to streamline remediation
of recurrent site problems. This document was issued jointly by DOE
and EPA [March 1997, 2 pages]. Download from http://tis-nt.eh.doe.gov/oepa.
Mailing lists
The Bioremediation Discussion Group at ^-1^0,^^nom consists of a
moderated mailing list that serves over 1,300 environmental
scientists/engineers worldwide. The BioGroup was developed to be
a global forum for discussion of intrinsic bioremediation (natural
attenuation) and enhanced bioremediation. If you are interested in
being added to the list server, sign up at http://biogroup.gzea.com/membership.asp.
There is no fee for membership.

Brownfields '97. EPA is hosting Brownfields '97 on September 3-5,
1997 in Kansas City, Missouri. It will bring together a wide range of
stakeholders to foster effective partnerships that facilitate the
revitalization of contaminated properties. For questions and
registration information, contact the Brownfields '97 Conference
Hotline at 1-888-795-4684.
Recent Developments/Applications in Ground-Water
Remediation Technologies. The Ground Water Remediation
Technologies Analysis Center will be hosting this session at the
"Emerging Technologies in Hazardous Waste Management IX"
meeting sponsored by ACS. The 1997 meeting will be held on
September 15-17, 1997, at the Hilton Hotel in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. Presentations will describe emerging technologies for
treating gaseous, liquid or solid hazardous wastes associated with a
wide variety of industries. Presentations will span from fundamental
research to demonstration programs for new technologies. This
year's ACS meeting will be co-sited with Enviro Expo '97. For
information on exhibiting or sponsorships for the Enviro Expo, call
404-355-4884 or fax 404-355-6765.
