Message #13: March, 1998
We have just completed the first full year of producing and delivering
TechDirect. Since beginning this monthly E-mail service, TechDirect
has announced the availability of around 120 new technical
publications. We think that we are on track in delivering to your
computer doorstep information relevant to your professional needs.
As always, we welcome your input.
Since February 1, TechDirect has 175 new subscribers for a total of
4236. Welcome to all the newcomers. If your peers are interested in
subscribing to TechDirect, they may do so on the Clean-Up
Information (CLU-IN) home page at http://clu-in.org. If they do not
have Internet access, your peers may subscribe by sending an
E-mail message to lyris@lists.epa.gov, do not type anything onto
the "Subject" line, and in the body of the message type: subscribe

New Publications and Databases
Vendor Information System for Innovative Treatment
Technologies (VISITT 6.0). The newest version of VISITT was
released in February. VISITT 6.0 is a user friendly database of
vendor-provided information on innovative treatment technologies. It
contains cost and performance data on nearly 375 hazardous waste
treatment technologies supplied by 214 vendors. Users may build
unique searches based upon numerous criteria. Download from
http://clu-in.org/techpubs.htm. A CD ROM with VISITT 6.0 and Vendor FACTS 3.0
will be available soon from (800) 490-9198 or (513) 489-8190 or fax
your request to (513) 891-6685.
Vendor Field Analytical and Characterization Technology
System (Vendor FACTS 3.0). This updated (released in February)
Windows-based system provides information on field portable
technologies for measuring and monitoring contaminated soil and
groundwater. The database of vendors and their specific technology
application and performance information (as provided by the
vendors) can be searched by media, contaminants, technologies,
vendors etc. to determine appropriate technologies and their
availability for a specific site need. Version 3.0 contains information
on 154 analytical, sampling, geophysical, and extraction
technologies. Download from http://clu-in.org/techpubs.htm. A compact disc
containing Vendor FACTS 3.0 and VISITT 6.0 will be available soon

Bioremediation Field Evaluation: Hill Air Force Base, Utah (EPA
540-R-97-505).This Office of Research and Development
publication presents the findings of an evaluation conducted at Hill
Air Force Base. The purpose of the study was to determine the
effect of airflow injection rate on the effectiveness of bioventing in
stimulating biodegradation of a JP-4 spill [May 1997, 13 pages].
Download this report and other bioremediation studies from

copies, contact (513) 569-7562 or fax to (513) 569-7566.
Natural Attenuation of Chlorinated Volatile Organic Compounds
in a Freshwater Tidal Wetlands, Aberdeen Proving Ground,
Maryland, (Water Resources Investigation Report 97-4171). This
report was produced by the U.S. Geological Survey in coordination
with the U.S. Army Garrison, Aberdeen Proving Ground. The
purpose of this report is to describe the natural attenuation of VOCs
in a wetland study area. Biodegradation and sorption were found to
be significant natural attenuation mechanisms for dechlorination
[Fall 1997, 105 pages]. For copies, contact (303) 202-4700, the

Phytoremediation of TCE in Groundwater Using Populus. This
report was prepared under grant for EPA by Jonathan Chappell, a
National Network of Environmental Management Studies fellow. The
publication provides a basic understanding and current status of
phytoremediation for shallow groundwater [February 1998, 54
pages]. View or download from http://clu-in.ora/techpubs.htm.
Multi-State Evaluation of the Site Characterization and Analysis
Penetrometer System. This report, developed by the Interstate
Technology Regulatory Cooperation (ITRC) workgroup, examines
states' concerns in accepting an innovative site characterization
technology, and more specifically, the SCAPS-LIF sensor
technology. Based on each state's level of involvement in the
technology evaluation process, they were asked to identify
concerns, if any, their state would have in accepting the technology
