EPA GUIDANCE
EPA's Strategy for Enforcement of Regulatory Requirements
Applicable to Underground Storage Tank (UST) Facilities
(Memorandum and Strategy Paper). This memorandum and strategy
were issued jointly by EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance
Assistance and the Office of Underground Storage Tanks. They
describe EPA's strategy for enforcement of the underground storage
tank requirements [August 1998, Memo - 2 pages, Strategy - 4
pages]. View or download at http://www.epa.aov/oeca/ore/rcra/cmp/081098.pdf. For hard
copies, contact the RCRA/UST Hotline at (800) 424-9346 or (703)

DOCUMENTS
A Citizen's Guide to Phytoremediation (EPA 542-F-98-011). This
technology fact sheet provides an overview of phytoremediation,
describes the mechanisms by which it can remove or treat
contaminants and identifies sites where phytoremediation is being
demonstrated [August 1998, 6 pages]. View or download at
httn://ciu-in.orn/technuhs.htm. For hard copies, contact (800) 490-9198 or (513)
489-8190 or fax your request to (513) 891-6685.
Evaluation of Subsurface Engineered Barriers at Waste Sites
(EPA 542-R-98-005). This report provides a national retrospective
analysis of barrier field performance, as well as information that may
be useful in developing guidance on the use and evaluation of
barrier systems. The report focuses on vertical barriers; evaluation
of caps was a secondary objective [August 1998, 136 pages]. Will

Innovations in Site Characterization - Case Study: Hanscom Air
Force Base (EPA 542-R-98-006). This case study was developed
by the U.S. EPA Technology Innovation Office. This is a
condensation of a much larger report titled, A Dynamic Investigation:
Adaptive Sampling and Analysis Program for Operable Unit 1 at
Hanscom Air Force Base, Bedford Massachusetts which can be
viewed at http://www.clu-in.ora/video/hanscom.htm. This is the first in a series of case
studies to document the cost and performance information for
innovative tools that support less costly and more representative site
characterization. Download at http ://cl u-in .orq/tech pu bs. htm. For hard copies,
contact (800) 490-9198 or (513) 489-8190 or fax your request to

Field Sampling and Analysis Technologies Matrix and
Reference Guide (EPA 542-B-98-002). This document was
advertised in the June TechDirect message. It is now available in
hard copy. Contact (800) 490-9198 or (513) 489-8190 or fax your

Ground Water Currents (EPA 542-N-98-008). This periodic
newsletter highlights technologies for groundwater cleanup. The
current issue features the results of a five-year study on natural
attenuation in wetlands at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, a new
method for enhancing pump and treat remediation, and improved
techniques for measure vadose zone DNAPL contamination.

CONFERENCES AND SYMPOSIA
1998 Hazardous Waste Technology Exposition and Conference,
San Diego, November 3-5. The Interstate Technology Regulatory
Cooperation (ITRC) workgroup, a coalition of 26 states, is hosting a
conference on state acceptance of innovative technologies. This
conference will feature presentations and roundtable discussions
regarding state information needs for technology consideration. The
technology areas and topics that will be discussed include
phytoremediation, in situ oxidation, in situ bioremediation,
recirculating wells, UXO, DNAPLs, Radwaste, and pesticides.
Companies that offer these technologies or deal with these
contamination problems are invited to exhibit and participate in
roundtable discussions with the state regulators. The deadline for

Y2K War Stories. If anyone has any examples of potential Y2K
related vulnerabilities associated with remediation systems, please
email me at h^m^n nm. I am trying to assemble real life scenarios
of remediation system disruptions or failures that may occur as a
result of Y2K. We plan to add these to the growing list of examples
were archived at http://clu-in.org/y2k.htm. We are doing this as a
public service to raise awareness of potential vulnerabilities in the
hazardous waste cleanup community.
