SmartWay is an innovative, voluntary, public-private, market-driven partnership. SmartWay helps companies improve their transportation supply chains - to move more ton-miles of freight with lower emissions and less energy, and at a lower cost. Since 2004, SmartWay Partners have avoid emitting 143 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 2.7 million short tons of nitrogen oxides and 112,000 short tons of particulate matter. They've saved 336 million barrels of oil and $44.8 billion in fuel costs. This is equivalent to eliminating annual energy use in over 21 million homes. 5.
