SBA Releases Small Business Guidance and Loan
Resources for COVID-19
The US Small Business Administration (SBA) released
guidance to support small businesses in response to
the COVID-19 outbreak. This guidance includes
general recommendations for businesses and
employers, as well as information about SBA loan and
debt relief options. Other federal agencies have
announced funding and partnership opportunities for
innovators addressing COVID-19
including NSF and HHS.
EPA Awards $2.3 million to Small Businesses
EPA announced $2.3 million in funding for 23 contracts
with small businesses as part of Phase I of the SBIR
Program. Recipients of Phase I funding receive up to
$100,000 to develop their environmental technologies
for marketplace. This year's Phase I recipients are
providing innovative solutions to environmental
challenges including PFAS remediation in water and
soii, microplastics characterization, air pollution
monitoring and food waste prevention.
Upcoming EPA SBIR Opportunities
EPA plans to release the 2021 Phase I SBIR
solicitation this June. A webinar will be held prior to
solicitation release with information on the EPA SBIR
Program and how to apply. The Arkansas Small
Business and Technology Development center is also
hosting an informational webinar on May 20 to discuss
the EPA SBIR Program. Sign up for the EPA SBIR

opportunities.

Small Business Research Innovation
Program supports small businesses to
develop and commercialize novel
environmental technologies that
support this mission.
PHASE I:
Phase I awards are 5100,000 for six
months for "proof of concept" of the
technology.
PHASE II:
Phase II awards are up to $400,000
for two years to further develop and
commercialize the technology.
Phase II companies that obtain
qualifying third party investments are
eligible for a commercialization
option of $100,000.

EPA SBIR SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
TIAX LLC, an EPA SBIR Phase II small business out of
Massachusetts, was awarded the commercialization
option of nearly $100,000. TIAX is developing
technology within the homeland security sector for the
encapsulation of biological contaminants in
transportation systems. TIAX received a contract from
the US Army, Defense Forensics and Biometrics
Agency (DFBA) for their forensic surface sampling
technology. With EPA and DFBA funding, TIAX plans
to explore pathways to make formulations
manufacturable for their technology.
