Upland Soil Areas Excavation/Dredging

Community Update	August 2016

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing its thir-
teenth update to inform the community of the progress of activities
related to that portion of the Pompton Lakes Study Area known as
the Upland Soil Areas. The project site for this phase includes Ro-
tary Park, the woodlands adjacent to and west of Rotary Park that
includes Acid Brook (south of Lakeside Ave) and, the area along the
south side of Lakeside Avenue moving east to Lakeside Ave. Park.
Preparation for the next phase of work (mechanical dredging of Ar-
ea A and the Island Area is underway. The project continues to be
on schedule.

ACTIVITIES—WEEK OF AUGUST 15TH

~	Transported/disposed of 485 loads of impacted material as of
August 18th

~	Completed excavation of Uplands Soil Areas with the exception
of Area A1 where excavation is constrained by a sewer line

~	Completed backfilling of excavated areas

~	Began construction of work platform in lower area for next
phase of work - mechanical dredging of Area A and Island Area

~	Installed debris screen in front of Acid Brook by-pass

~	Continued perimeter monitoring—data on website (see link:

environmental-monitoring/

~	No exceedances of dust, mercury vapor, or turbidity action lev-
els during monitoring associated with site activities (material
excavation and loading of trucks)

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES—WEEK OF AUGUST 22ND

~	Continue installation of work platform in lower area

~	Complete load-out and off-site disposal of impacted soil except
for Area A1

~	Install silt curtain and begin mechanical dredging of access
channel for next phase of work

~	Continued perimeter monitoring of dust/mercury/turbidity levels

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

~	Although not required based on dust monitoring to date,
Chemours is operating a spray system to further control dust

EPA CLEANUP ACTIVITIES

Basic Site Information

The initial phase of work includes
excavation of approximately 3,160
cubic yards of impacted soil contain-
ing mercury, lead and other metals.
Work is being performed by Seven-
son Environmental Services, Inc., a
contractor for The Chemours Com-
pany FC, LLC (Chemours) with
EPA and NJDEP oversight.
