U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 3 Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia Hunting Point on the Potomac Apartments Resident Update Alexandria, VA http://www.epa.gov/reg3wcmd/asbestos_huntingpt.html July 2014 EPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Agency for Toxic Substances and Dis- ease Registry (ATSDR) are working together to ensure that public health is protected. EPA continues to work with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (VI)IJ) to oversee the work at the complex and we continue to coordinate our progress with the Alexandria Health Department (AHD), and the Virginia Department of Health (VI)H). New Work: Carpet Removal RESIDENTS MEETING PLANNED Representatives from Laramar and the EPA will be available to answer questions. WHEN: Tuesday, July 8, 2014 WHERE: The Lyceum - Lecture Hall 201 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA TIME: 7pm - 9pm http://www.epa.gov/reg3wcmd/ asbestos_huntingpt.html Work Progress Update ¦S EPA and VDLI continue to oversee the work be- ing done by the owners of the apartment complex. S With the exception of planned carpet removal, as of June 23, 2014, Laramar has completed the asbes- tos cleaning and associated air sampling at the site. S On June 20, 2014, Laramar was approved to resume renovation work not subject to the asbestos NESHAP. A list of this non-asbestos related work is available on our website at: http://www.epa.gov/reg3wcmd/ asbestos_huntingpt.html At the request of EPA, Laramar has agreed to re- move the wall-to-wall carpeting from those units and areas which were subject to asbestos cleaning. EPA requested this step as an additional precaution because of the possibility that the carpeting can still hold on to asbestos fibers. EPA is also requesting that Laramar re-clean and re- sample the apartments where carpet will be re- moved. EPA understands that this may cause an unexpected inconvenience to those affected residents. However, this additional precaution further reduces the poten- tial for residents to be exposed to asbestos fibers. More details about the carpet removal will be dis- cussed by representatives of Laramar at the residents meeting. For additional information about the steps you can take to reduce your exposure to asbestos, contact: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Information Center 1-888-422-8737 ------- Next Steps There are several remaining actions related to the post-cleaning data collected by Laramar and the continuation of renovation work involving asbestos -containing materials, including: ¦S Data Review Process: Data generated by Laramar during the post-cleaning and clearance process must be reviewed by the EPA for quality assurance. CDC/ATSDR will also review the data and share its findings and health interpretation with state and local health department authorities. As soon as that review is complete, we plan to hold another residents meeting to answer any questions or concerns about the data. It's important to note that, based on our review of data generated from the sampling prior to the start of cleaning, and more recent sampling results, we do not believe there is an immediate public health concern. ¦S Asbestos Renovation Work to Resume: On April 2, 2014, EPA ordered the owner of the Hunt- ing Point on the Potomac apartment complex, and its contractor, to stop work until they carefully and fully comply with the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPj, part of the Clean Air Act regulations that cover demolition and renovation activities involving asbestos-containing materials. As part of the order, EPA required the owners to submit a work plan, for review and approval, before any work involving asbestos-containing materials can resume. EPA has approved Laramar 's work plan for the continuation of renovation activities, including the abatement of regulated asbestos-containing materials, at the complex. EPA and VDLI will oversee the remainder of the renovation work.
