PROJECT SUMMARY

Community

The City of Gilroy, located south of San Jose, California, will be the future home of
a California High Speed Rail station. The city is exploring options to support
the maintenance and emergency training needs of the high-speed rail station,
including investigation of this property for redevelopment. EPA supports projects
that maximize use of existing infrastructure, and in the case of this technical
assistance, can serve as a model for other California cities planning for high-speed rail
stations.

Property Information

The property is composed of agricultural land and wetlands and has been
maintained as agricultural land since 1953. Mission Ranches Company LLC of
King City, California, currently leases the property for agricultural use.

Technical Assistance

EPA provides technical assistance to research historic property uses, conduct
environmental sampling and identify cleanup options and costs. An EPA-funded
environmental assessment of this property included soil sampling to identify
environmental concerns associated with the past use of the property and
surrounding properties, including the potential presence of organochlorine pesticides
and arsenic used as pesticides in the early 20th century. The soil sampling results
did not identify organochlorine pesticides or arsenic concentrations in soil
above human health screening levels. Recommendation; No additional
assessment work or cleanup is required for future redevelopment of the property.

Future Use

The City of Gilroy is considering reuse of this property as a maintenance yard
and emergency training facility for the California Lfigh Speed Rail system.
