SITE DESCRIPTION

Location: The site is located on Highway 142, Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma.

Setting: Imperial Refining is an inactive and abandoned crude oil refining facility that
operated from 1917 until 1924 and declared bankruptcy in 1934.

PRESENT STATUS AND ISSUES

The ODEQ is the lead agency for remedial activity. The State is drafting the Work plan and
cooperative agreement application.

WASTES AND VOLUMES

When the facility ceased operations in 1924, the tanks, piping, and structures were dismantled. During
this activity, waste products associated with these materials were dumped onto the ground. The waste
includes contaminated soils from tank bottoms, coke piles, reservoir sediments, and building rubble.

The waste piles are found in 12 areas on site and are characterized as dry, asphalt-like tar mats
associated with oil-contaminated soil on top of an oil-stained clay. The estimated volume for all 12
areas is between 15,000 and 17,000 cubic yards. Analytical results found BTEX (benzene, toluene,
ethlybenzene, and xylene), PAHs (polyaromatice hydrocarbons), O&G (oil and grease), and metals.

The potential exists for elevated health/ecological risk levels associated with BTEX (benzene, toluene,
ethlybenzene, and xylene), PAHs (polynuclear aromatice hydrocarbons), O&G (oil and grease), and
metals involved in refinery activities. At present, the media of concern include surface water, sediments,
surrounding wetland areas, and soil. Ground water and air have yet to be evaluated.
