Cleaning Up New England	SITE UPDATE

Troy Mills Superfund Site

U.S. EPA I HAZARDOUS WASTE PROGRAM AT EPA NEW ENGLAND

THE SUPERFUND PROGRAM protects human health
and the environment by investigating and cleaning up often-abandoned
hazardous waste sites and engaging communities throughout the process.
Many of these sites are complex and need long-term cleanup actions.
Those responsible for contamination are held liable for cleanup costs.
EPA strives to return previously contaminated land and groundwater
to productive use.

BACKGROUND:

The Troy Mills Landfill Superfund Site (the "Site") is located off of Rockwood Pond Road, about 1.5 miles south of the
center of Troy, New Hampshire. It is situated on the wooded portion of a larger 270-acre parcel of property. The
Site was used from 1967 to 1978 by Troy Mills, Inc., a local fabric manufacturer, as a drum disposal area for estimated
6,000-10,000 drums of liquid wastes and sludge. The wastes included and contained solvents, vinyl resins, plasticizers,
pigments, and top-coating products. Since 2003, the USEPA and NHDES have been implementing remedial cleanup
activities at the site, including removal of disposed drums of wastes, removal of contaminated soil, construction of a
permeable soil cap and monitoring of groundwater.

NEXT STEPS:

and New Hampshire Department of Environmental
Services and its contractors will be conducting remedia-
tion activities at the Troy Mills Superfund Site, The reme-
diation will be conducted over a 5 week period begin-
ning December 1st, 2013. The work to be performed
will include the excavation of concrete trenches at the
Site, crushing of the concrete in-place, backfilling of
the excavation and restoration of the impacted area.
