This location has been home to glazed ceramic tile manufacturing since 1927, when it was owned by Franklin Tile Company In the early 1950s, operations at this facility were taken over by American Encaustic Tile Company The name of the company was changed to American Olean Tile Company in 1959 and manufacturing activities continued under this company for another 36 years. Dai-Tile International, then the largest U.S. manufacturer of ceramic tile, acquired American Olean Tile Company in December of 1995. The tile companies that utilized this facility manufactured a complete line of glazed wall tiles, glazed bathroom accessories, and blazed and unglazed floor tiles. The manufacturing processes were typical of the tile industry using raw materials such as flint, pyrophyllite, shale, clay, steatite, whiting and kaolin. The glazes were made using heavy metal salts including barium, cadmium, copper, cobalt, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium, tin, zirconium, and zinc. In February 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Final Determination that no further corrective action is required at the facility because closure activities were properly completed. The facility was closed in 1998 and the property was sold to Stoltz Management, who has redeveloped the property into office space. www. epa-.jrov/rea3wcmd/correctiveaction.htm For More Information EPA Region 3 Contact: Khai Dao, (215) 814-814-5497, dao.khai@epa.gov ------- |
