Worthington Steel Malvern, Pennsylvania The Road to Reuse ~~~ This 40-acre facility is located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Until June 2002, the property was owned and operated by Worthington Steel, which processed and manufactured cold rolled steel and steel products. All industrial operations were shut down and the property was sold to O'Neil Properties, who plans to redevelop the property into commercial offices and retail stores. Redevelopment at the facility will be strictly for commercial use only. Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 40 Current Use: Planned commercial redevelopment O'Neil Properties is addressing the groundwater and soil contamination at the facility, which resulted from the industrial uses associated with the manufacturing of steel products. The primary contaminants in the groundwater at the facility are cyanide and localized volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are defined and stable within the facility's property lines. Groundwater monitoring will ensure that these plumes remain onsite. To expedite the redevelopment of the former facility, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) transferred the regulatory oversight to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP). EPA expects that the investigation and remediation will proceed under the PADEP Act 2 Program and intends to rely upon PADEP to resolve any current or future closure and corrective action issues associated with the Facility. www. epa-.jrov/rea3wcmd/correctiveaction.htm For More Information EPA Region 3 Contact: Khai Dao, (215) 814-5497, dao.lchai@epa.gov ------- |
