Electroplating Impoundment LDF (Formerly: Stackpole) St* Marys, Pennsylvania The Road to Reuse ~~~ This 50-acre facility, where manufacturing activities by Stackpole first began in 1906, is located in St. Marys, Pennsylvania. Stackpole continued operating this facility until 1992, producing carbon and granite products, dry cell batteries, and soft ferrite magnetic cores for various electronic devices. These manufacturing activities resulted in soil and groundwater contamination. The main groundwater contamination is from volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Soil contaminants at this facility include, but are not limited to: heavy metals, PCB, and solvents. Remediation and cleanup activities began in 1982 and have resulted in the removal of an underground storage tank, the installation of 41 groundwater monitoring wells, and the remediation of a coal tar spill. Also, three ferrite lagoons, two electroplating wastewater surface impoundments, and a landfill were closed. Groundwater monitoring occurs quarterly at various areas of interest throughout the facility. The current owner of the property, North Central Enterprises, Inc. (NCE), is the local economic development agency. NCE, Stackpole, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection entered into a Buyer-Seller Agreement in 1995, which provides liability relief to the buyers and sellers of contaminated land. Under this agreement, Stackpole agreed to continue to remediate the site under the state's Land Recycling Program. NCE has set its goal at rehabilitating and leasing each of the 42 buildings that were once part of Stackpole Corp. By the end of 2001, NCE was able to put back into circulation all but four of those buildings.
