SEPA United States Environmental Protection Agency The EPA wants to update you on cleanup activities at the Bremerton Gas Works Superfund Site Bremerton Gas Works Superfund Site Public Meeting September 9,2014 While you may not have heard from us since we completed our Community Involvement Plan for the site in early 2013, we have been busy working with Cascade Natural Gas to: • Collect new data to better understand the nature and extent of contamination on the beach near the old gasworks location. • Take additional actions on the beach to reduce the potential for exposure to contaminated beach sediments. • Research and review historical information sources to help us plan our investigation of the site. On September 9, 2014, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Cascade Natural Gas Corporation, and the Washington Department of Health will share information with the public about activities related to the cleanup of the Bremerton Gas Works Superfund Site. The meeting will be held at Bremerton High School, Commons/Multi-Media Room 1500 13th Street, Bremerton, WA 98337, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. At the same time, the Washington State Department of Health has independently been conducting a public health assessment of the site. This assessment will determine if the site poses a public health risk, and make any necessary recommendations to reduce exposures. The EPA is currently developing what we call a "Scoping Memorandum." This document will summarize what we know now about the site to help us determine the types of studies we will need to perform to design the cleanup plan for the site. This meeting will be an opportunity to learn about these activities as well as upcoming site-related work. It will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions and provide your input on the work we are doing at the site. ------- Bremerton Gas Works Superfund Site - Public Meeting September 9,2014 Site Background You're Invited to a Public Meeting Where: Bremerton High School When September 9,2014 Commons/Multi-Media Room Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. 1500 13th Street Bremerton, WA 98337 The EPA arid Cascade Natural Gas will give presentations about site-related activities.Washington State Department of Health staff will also present information on their ongoing public health assessment. The site is located a mile and a half north of downtown Bremerton, along the Port Washington Narrows in Puget Sound. In May 2012, it was added to the Superfund National Priorities List of highly contaminated sites. With EPA oversight, Cascade Natural Gas performed focused beach cleanups at the site in fall 2010 and fall 2013. In spring 2014, some additional work was done on the uplands part of the site. The EPA is now working on a long-term, comprehensive cleanup plan for the site to protect people and the environment. At this time, we are in the planning stage for defining the amount, types, and location of contamination at the site. 2 ------- The EPA Wants to Update You on Cleanup Activities at the Bremerton Gas Works Superfund Site • •• PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE PORT WASHINGTON NARROWS Site Plan GasWorks Property For More Information...
