Community Action for a Renewed Environment
(CARE) Grants
Applications due March 9, 2010
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is making $2
million available in 2010 to reduce pollution at the local
level through the Community Action for a Renewed
Environment (CARE) program. CARE is a community-
based program that works with county and local
governments, tribes, non-profit organizations and
universities to help the public understand and reduce
toxic risks from numerous sources.
EPA will award CARE cooperative agreements in two
levels. Level I awards range from $75,000 to $100,000
and will help establish community-based partnerships to
develop local environmental priorities. Level II awards,
ranging from $150,000 to $300,000 each, will support
communities that have established broad-based
partnerships, have identified the priority toxic risks in the
community, and are prepared to measure results,
implement risk-reduction activities and become self-
sustaining. Applications for the CARE grants are due
March 9, 2010.
Webcasts:
EPA will conduct three Webcasts to answer questions
from prospective applicants about the application
process on February 2, 23, and 26, 2010 from 1:00 p.m.
to 3:00 p.m.
Go to: http://www.epa.gov/care/ for more information,

EPA New England Low Impact
Development (LID) Website
The new and improved LID topic
page has now available at:
http://www.epa.qov/reqion1/topics/
water/lid, html
LID is an approach to land
development (or re-development)
that works with nature to manage
stormwater as close to its source as
possible. By preserving and recreating natural landscape
features, LID minimizes effective imperviousness,
creating functional and appealing site drainage that
treats stormwater as a resource rather than a waste
product.

Environmental Justice Small
Grants Announcement
Due January 8, 2010
The Environmental Justice Small
Grants Program (EJSG), supports and empowers
communities working on solutions to local environmental
and public health issues. The closing date for the RFA is
January 8, 2010.
This year the program is emphasizing the need to
address the disproportionate impacts of climate change
in communities with environmental justice concerns.
There is a well-established scientific consensus that
climate change will cause disproportionate impacts upon
vulnerable populations. As stated in the Technical
Support Document for the Endangerment and Cause or
Contribute Findings for Greenhouse Gases under
Section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act (April 2009), "Within
settlements experiencing climate change, certain
parts of the population may be especially
vulnerable; these include the poor, the elderly, those
already in poor health, the disabled, those living alone,
those with limited rights and power (such as recent
immigrants with limited English skills), and/or indigenous
populations dependent on one or a few resources.

The International Economic Development Council
(IEDC) 2010 Leadership Summit aims to help leaders in
the economic development profession prepare for a

opportunities in these and other sectors. Our methods of
growing quality jobs and promoting economic growth are
consequently shifting with new attention to possibilities
of entrepreneurship and sustainability. Given all of this
flux, the economy of the future will be dramatically
different than the economy of today. To remain effective,
economic developers will need to adapt to a new set of
opportunities and competitive factors. Join the top
professionals in the field as we explore and prepare for
the new economic engines of our future.
