Potential for Future Use Former Gary Industrial Property 3615 West 25th Avenue, Gary, Indiana 46404 J Site Name: Lake Sandy Jo (M&M Landfill) Superfund Site Size: Approximately 40 acres Supported Site Uses: None (potential recreational use) Existing Site Infrastructure: All major utilities are available in the local area. Readiness for Use: A third five-year review for the site was completed in September 2006 and confirmed that the site is protective of human health and the environment in the short- term. Preliminary reuse evaluations suggest the potential for active and passive recreational uses. Gary, Indiana The site is located on the southeast side of the City of Gary, Lake County, Indiana, approximately 30 miles east of Chicago. SETTING: • The site is zoned for industrial land uses. The site landfill cover, however, was not designed to support the impacts of buildings or trucks. • Surroundingland uses are primarily residential. A small scrap and vehicle storage lot is located immediately northwest of the site. • U.S. Highway 6/Interstate 80/94 borders the site to the south. • Surrounding population: 0.5 mile, 2,452 people; 2.5 miles, 59, 674 people; 4 miles, 138,286 people. REMEDIAL STATUS: • Construction of the site's remedy was completed in 1994. • Contaminated soils were consolidated and capped on site. • Ground water monitoring is ongoing.
