WISCONSIN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND SINKS INVENTORY: SUMMARY 25.0 20.0-1 > c o £ 15.0-| •*-» o s c 10.0 o 5.0- 0.0 Wisconsin Greenhouse Gas Emissions for 1990 Million Metric Tons of Carbon Equivalent Total Energy Waste Agriculture Industry Land Use Sector ~ carbon equivalent The report "Wisconsin Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Estimate for 1990" provides a detailed inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and sinks for Wisconsin in 1990. Emissions were estimated using methods from EPA's 1995 guidance document State Workbook: Methodologies for Estimating Greenhouse Gas Emissions. In 1990, Wisconsin emitted 27.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCE). Wisconsin estimated emissions of 5.0 MMTCE from biomass fuels and from other sources not included in the workbook. Emissions from these sources are not included in the reported total or the table below.1 The principal greenhouse gases were carbon dioxide, comprising 84.4 million metric tons (23.0 MMTCE), and methane, with 0.59 million metric tons (3.4 MMTCE). Other emissions included 9,000 metric tons of nitrous oxide (0.8 MMTCE). 1 Note that the state of the art emission inventory method has advanced since Wisconsin completed its inventory; therefore, we have made the following adjustments to Wisconsin's emission estimates. First, we excluded emission estimates for sources not covered by the most recent inventory guidance (http://www.epa.gov/ttnchie1/eiip/techrep.htrrtfareen). These emissions include carbon dioxide from landfills, nuclear fuel, pulp and paper kilns; oil refining, transportation, and flaring; production, processing, transportation, and distribution of natural gas; nitrous oxide from forest land use change; methane from deer and waste combustion; carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide from wastewater; and methane and carbon dioxide from wetland drainage. An asterisk ( * ) indicates that emissions of the gas from this sector were zero, insignificant, or not reported. Emissions due to coal mining and extraction of natural gas and oil are included in the energy - other figures, and emissions from biofuel combustion are excluded. The major source of carbon dioxide emissions was fossil fuel combustion (99%). Carbon dioxide sinks resulting from land use were not estimated in this inventory. Contributors to methane emissions were domesticated animals (55%), landfills (22%), coal mining (8%), natural gas production (9%), manure management (6%), and fossil fuel combustion (1%). Nitrous oxide emissions were attributable to agricultural soils (63%), fossil fuel combustion (35%), and waste combustion (2%). Wisconsin's emissions in 1990 were 5.5 MTCE per capita, compared to 1990 U.S. emissions of 6.4 MTCE per capita. ------- |
