Adoption Statement Aquatic Reef Habitat Chesapeake Bay Program Chesapeake Executive Council Adoption Statement Aquatic Reef Habitat In fulfillment of the requirement to develop an aquatic reef habitat plan for oysters stated in the Chesapeake Bay Program Action Agenda presented to the Chesapeake Executive Counccil in August 1991, we the undersigned: • adopt the Chesapeake Bay Aquatic Reef Habitat Plan • accept the Plan as a guide to enhancing, protecting, and restoring benthic reefs as ecological systems to benefit the oyster resources and the diverse ecological community associated with Chesapeake Bay structured reefs, • agree to work together to implement, by the dates set forth in the Plan, the management actions recommended to construct structured reefs as specified in the Plan, and to regulate the use of these areas to protect and preserve the ecological integrity of the reefs, and • commit on a continuing basis to explore funding options from public and private sources for the reconstruction of oyster reefs. We further agree to designate approximately 5,000 acres each in Maryland and Virginia, and 1,000 acres in the Potomac, and to create new oyster reef habitat within these areas by the year 2000 in accordance with the results of the pilot study, research, and monitoring called for in the Plan.
