SOUTHWEST JEFFERSON COUNTY MINING MISSOURI EPA ID# MON000705443 EPA Region 7 City: De Soto, Hillsboro, Valles Mines, Olympian Village County: Jefferson Other Names: 04/27/2009 SITE DESCRIPTION The Southwest Jefferson County Mining Site encompasses an area of approximately 166 square miles and is considered the southwest quarter of Jefferson County. Mining activities began in Jefferson County in the early 1800s. Historical records indicate that over 190 potential mining sites were once operating within the site. Mining activities include smelting, with three major smelters located at Valles Mines, Sandy Mines, and Mammoth Mines. Mining at the site was primarily for lead, zinc, and barite. Remnants of milling structures, smelters, chat piles and mill wastes can be observed at the site. Site Responsibility: The Site is currently being addressed through federal action. NPL LISTING HISTORY Proposed Date: 04/09/2009 Final Date: Deleted Date: THREATS AND CONTAMINANTS ------- 03 Extensive lead contamination in surface soil, at levels exceeding health-based screening levels, has been identified at 423 residential properties at the site. 41 private drinking water wells have been identified with lead concentrations exceeding the federal drinking water standard of 15 micrograms per liter. CLEANUP APPROACH Response Action Status Initial Actions: Removal Assessment activities continue at the site and consist of sampling residential properties for lead-contaminated surface soil and drinking water. Through time-critical removal actions, surface soil has been replaced at 129 properties, and an alternative drinking water supply is being provided to 31 residences. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT The EPA has facilitated several public meetings to inform the citizens of site conditions, proposed NPL listing, and removal action progress. A fact sheet was distributed in March 2008 to invite the local community to a public meeting scheduled March 25, 2008. A display advertisement was placed in the Jefferson County Journal on March 2, 2008, to announce the availability of the administrative record and to open a 30-day comment period for the administrative record. A fact sheet was distributed in February 2008 to invite the community to a public meeting scheduled February 26, 2009. Ads were also placed in two newspapers ( Jefferson County Journal and News Democrat) to announce the February 2009 meeting. A fact sheet was distributed in April 2009 to announce EPA's decision to propose the site for the National Priorities List. Display ads were also placed in two newspapers (,Jefferson County Leader and suburban journal) to announce EPA's NPL proposal.
