S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to complete cleanup of the neighborhoods near the former American Lead site in Indianapolis this Spring. Cleanup of lead from contaminated residential and commercial properties in the area began 2 years ago and has been delayed due to seasonal conditions. Work begins the first week of April and is expected to last 4-6 weeks, depending on weather conditions. When work began in 2005, 237 properties were listed as candidates for cleanup. Twelve propexties were deemed as clean. To date 201 properties have been excavated, backfilled and restored. One property denied access. A total of 23 properties remain to be cleaned, where soil will be removed up to 2-feet deep and replaced with clean fill. EPA's safety threshold for lead contamination is 400 milligrams of lead per kilogram of soil. Yards that test higher than 400 will be cleaned by digging contaminated dirt and taking it to an off-site location. There are no cleanup activities inside homes. The Cleanup Process Once a yard is tested and samples show unsafe lead levels, environmental contractors meet with owners to discuss how they will clean the yard. Contaminated soil will be removed up to a maximum of 2-feet deep and replaced with clean soil and sod or seeded. Any other vegetation that has to be removed will be replaced with nursery stock. Usually, soil around large trees is removed by hand to save the tree. Pictures are taken before cleanup begins so there is a record of how a property looks before cleanup. These photographs also help contractors restore yards to their original appearance. ------- |
