n May of 2014, students at the Helen Tyson Middle School in Springdale, Arkansas helped install a rain garden
at their school. Two students and their facilitator attended the Illinois River Watershed Partnership {IRWP) Rain
Garden Academy in October 2013. The students
then completed a mini-grant application with
IRWP and were awarded funding for their project
Like most green infrastructure projects this rain
garden captures and treats stormwater runoff
from the roof of the school building and provides
community benefits in addition to helping to
manage wet weather flows. This bowl-shaped
garden was planted with native grasses, shrubs,
a nd flowers to help stormwater from the roof of
the school building to soak into the ground and
receive natural filtration from the plants' roots
a nd the soil. This project was completed with
grant funding from the U.S. EPA and the Arkansas
Natural Resources Commission.
