INNOVATIVE RESEARCH FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

REGIONAL SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

The Regional Science Workshop series is sponsored by the Office of Research
and Development's (ORD) Office of Science Policy (OSP). The objectives of
the Regional Science Workshops are to:

1.	Establish a better cross-Agency understanding of the science
applicable to human health and/or ecological topics specificto a
Region(s);

2.	Ensure transfer of technical information, particularly research
information produced from ORD laboratoriesand centers; and

3.	Develop a network of EPA scientists who will continue to
exchange information on these science topics as the Agency
moves forward in planning, research, and risk management
programs.

Workshop Selection, Planning,
and Outcome

Each year, the Regional Science
Liaisons (RSLs), the Superfund
and Technology Liaisons (STLs),
and regional staff identify priority
science topics on which to
conduct workshops. Each
workshop is planned and
conducted by a team of regional,
ORD, and interested program
office scientists, led by a regional
chairperson and facilitated by one
or more RSL and/or STL. These
workshops address the science
issues of great importance to the
Regions on the selected topic
area and range from small group
briefings and seminars to large
national workshops and
conferences.

Important outcomes include
maintainingthe cross-Agency

science networks established at
the workshops through planned
post-workshop projects and
activities, such as the
identification of collaborative
research opportunities;
creation of information-sharing
mechanisms, such as interactive
Web sites; and development of
science fact sheets and workshop
summary reports.
