W EPA PUBLIC NOTICE U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Reviews Cleanup at Combe Fill North Superfund Site The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting its 4TH Five-Year Review of the Combe Fill North Superfund Site located in Mt. Olive Township, Morris County, New Jersey. This review seeks to confirm that the cleanup conducted at the site, which included the following: 1) Grading and compacting the 65-acre waste disposal area; 2) Covering with one foot of clay; 3) Covering with six inches of topsoil; 4) Planting vegetative cover; 5) Installing a methane venting system; 6) Constructing a security fence around the site; and 7) Implementing a quarterly ground water and surface water monitoring program continues to be protective of public health and the environment and is functioning as designed. A summary of these activities and evaluation of the long-term protectiveness of the remedy will be included in the upcoming Five-Year Review report. EPA inspects Superfund sites every five years to ensure that cleanups conducted remain fully protective of human health and the environment. These regular reviews, which are required by federal law when contaminants remain at a site, include: ¦ Inspection of the site and cleanup technologies; ¦ Review of monitoring data, operating data, and maintenance records, and ¦ Determination if any new regulatory requirements have been established since EPA's original cleanup decision was finalized.
