EPA Begins Cleanup Action
At Former Plant Site

Ohio Cast Products Site

Canton, Ohio	April 2009

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 will soon begin
urgently needed cleanup and containment activities at a fire-damaged
Canton factory site contaminated with hazardous materials, debris and
asbestos. The cleanup project at the Ohio Cast Products site, 2408 13th
St. N.E., will be performed under emergency authority contained in
the federal Superfund law and is known as a "time-critical removal
action." Time-critical projects are done when an imminent threat to
public health exists at a contaminated site. Cleanup work should begin
in early April weather permitting.

Ohio Cast Products manufactured iron auto parts. The company went
bankrupt in 2004, and the location was abandoned in 2005. A fire
destroyed the office portion of the plant in February 2008. While
battling the blaze, the Canton Fire Department discovered numerous
drums and containers on-site, many labeled with the words
"flammable liquid." The city of Canton contacted Ohio EPA for
assistance, and after a site visit Ohio EPA formally requested EPA's
help in March 2008.

A May 2008 site assessment found "friable" asbestos in the building
rubble. Friable is the most dangerous kind of asbestos and means it can
easily crumble and release dangerous fibers into the air if disturbed.
Other contaminants at the site include drums and tanks containing
flammable and corrosive liquids. A dangerous industrial coolant called
polychlorinated biphenyl or PCB was also found within the warehouse
and in the surrounding soil due to leaking electrical transformers.

There is evidence of trespassing on the site and attempted looting. In
addition, a basement-like area holds containers storing unknown
materials as well as fire debris.

Public meeting

EPA and other officials will discuss the site and cleanup activities at a
meeting on Wednesday, April 29, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., in the Madge
Youtz Branch Library, 2921 Mahoning Road N.E., Canton.
