These reviews are required by the Superfund law [42 U.S.C. § 9621 (c)]. EPA Region 7 has completed the first five-year review of the Cleburn Street Well Superfund site. EPA conducted the five-year review to make sure the cleanup actions remain protective of human health and the environment. BACKGROUND The Cleburn Street Well site is located in Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska. The site consists of a former municipal water supply well, the Cleburn Street well, and surrounding ground water and soils containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). EPA designated the Cleburn Street Well site as five distinct operable units (OUs) based on the various sources of the contamination. Contamination in the Cleburn Street well was first discovered in March 1986 by the Nebraska Department of Health (NDOH). Numerous removal and remedial actions have been taken at the various operable units to protect human health and the environment. FIVE-YEAR REVIEW During the review, EPA studied information on the site to ensure the various remedies continue to be protective. The five-year review finds that the immediate threats have been addressed at OUs 1,2,3, and 4. The remedy for OU5 is scheduled to complete construction later in 2004. Although the remedy for OU5 has not yet been installed, exposure is being controlled so the remedy is protective in the short term and, once the remedy is fully implemented, it will be protective in the long term. The existing remedies are operating in a manner that is protective of human health and the environment. Because hazardous substances remain on site, additional five year reviews will be required. The next review is scheduled to be conducted in 2008. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The five-year review report can be reviewed at the following locations: Edith Abbott Memorial Library 211 N.
