Customers Keep Coming Back for More WaterSense

Quantitative opinion research conducted in 2021 revealed that consumers, once
made aware of WaterSense, would look for the label when purchasing plumbing
and irrigation products. And most customers who bought a WaterSense labeled
product said they would do so again in the future! In 2022, EPA commissioned
qualitative consumer research to consider the messaging used to talk about
WaterSense labeled products. Consumers viewed WaterSense as their guide to
find products that save water. Consumers also responded best to messaging that
focused on labeled products being affordable, independently certified to perform well, and beneficial for the
environment.

Looking to WaterSense for Pool Water Efficiency

WaterSense published the Jump Into Pool Water Efficiency guide to help residential
pool owners and maintenance professionals understand and implement water-efficient
pool practices. The guide covers practices such as using pool covers, installing high-
quality filtration systems, and learning to identify leaks. By using a solid pool cover, pool
owners could reduce evaporation by more than 90 percent!

Open House for WaterSense Homes 2.0

The first full year of Version 2 of the WaterSense Homes program saw exciting growth. The
total number of Home Certification Organizations (HCOs) increased from one to four and
the number of WaterSense labeled homes increased by more than 200 percent. Welcoming
additional HCOs into the program increases the program's national reach, offers more choices
to builders who wish to pursue the label, and provides greater availability of verifiers in the field.

Point-of-Use Reverse Osmosis Draft Specification Published

In 2022, EPA released the draft specification for point-of-use reverse osmosis (RO)
home water treatment systems to earn the WaterSense label. A point-of-use RO
system is a water filtration device that is connected to a single fixture and uses
the process of reverse osmosis to remove contaminants from the water supplied
to that fixture. Once the specification is final, point-of-use RO systems that have
earned the WaterSense label could reduce water use on average by nearly 3,200
gallons of water annually.

Coming in 2023: Sprinkler Nozzle Draft Specification

In November 2022, EPA issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) to develop a WaterSense
specification for spray sprinkler nozzles to reduce water use in irrigation systems.

As the next step in the process for approving spray sprinkler nozzles to earn the
WaterSense label, WaterSense expects to publish a draft specification in 2023. Once
the final specification is released, spray sprinkler nozzles would join WaterSense's
suite of outdoor labeled fixtures, including weather- and soil moisture-based
irrigation controllers and spray sprinkler bodies.
