EPA CLEANUP ACTIVITIES
Basic Site Information—2017

The scope of work in 2017 involves
hydraulic dredging, processing and
off-site disposal of sediment con-
taining mainly mercury and lead in a
36-acre area within Pompton Lake
called the Acid Brook Delta (ABD).
Placement of the eco-layer in Area
A, the Island Area and the ABD will
also be completed. The work will
be performed by The Chemours
Company FC, LLC., through its
contractor, Sevenson Environmental
Services with EPA/NJDEP over-
sight.

EPA's 39th update is to inform the community of the progress of
activities related to the upcoming dredging that will be performed on
that 36-acre portion of the Pompton Lake Study Area known as the
Acid Brook Delta (ABD). The dredging work is scheduled to com-
mence in the Spring 2017, but has yet to start.

Preparatory activities continue and relate to the fact that the method
of dredging in 2017 (hydraulic dredging) is different than the dredg-
ing performed in 2016 (mechanical dredging).

Preparatory activities currently underway (week of May 8th):

~	Continued installation of sediment processing and water treat-
ment equipment needed for 2017 including installation of piping,
electrical wiring and instrumentation controls.

~	Received granular activated carbon and completed filling vessels
that will be used as part of water treatment.

~	Securing permit modifications addressing changes in the sedi-
ment treatment processes

~	Continue routine inspection of site and work areas per approved
permits and for safety reasons.

Preparatory activities scheduled (week of May 15th):

~	Continue installation of sediment processing and water treatment
equipment needed for 2017 work including installation of piping
and electrical wiring.

~	Prepare for treatment system shakedown and testing with pota-
ble water.

~	Continue routine inspection of site and work areas per approved
permits and for safety purposes.

Note: Photographs included this week include loading of activated
carbon into treatment vessel and the backwash tank that will be used
as part of the treatment process.
