Investing in America through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling State and Territory Grant Fact Sheet Illinois Grant Recipient Information EPA Information Name: Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Region: EPA Region 5 Highlights • Conduct a comprehensive statewide generation and waste characterization study. • Develop a detailed report based on the waste characterization study outlining end-of-life management and material composition. Overview of Illinois' Planned Activities Illinois will produce a comprehensive study detailing the tons of municipal solid waste generated by material type in Illinois and how those materials are handled at the end of their life. Following the completion of this study, Illinois will develop a detailed report on material streams, generation location, and greenhouse gas emission reduction data associated with the management of the materials in the state. The data from the study also will enable Illinois EPA to target the use of state funds based on the material composition results. SWIFR Grants for States and Territories The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides the largest EPA investment in recycling in 30 years to support National Recycling Strategy implementation and build a circular economy for all. As part of the Investing in America agenda, this funding can be used to develop or update plans to advance post-consumer materials management, implement those plans, and to improve data collection efforts. These grants also advance the Justice^ Initiative, which aims to ensure that 40% of the overall benefits of certain Federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized, underserved, and overburdened by pollution.
